From my earliest memory I have sewn. My mother was creative, making quilts cushions and clothes and winter evenings were spent working on the skills she learned attending evening classes at the local school. My sister and I eagerly joined in the fun of helping to make the latest project.
While my children were small I continued to make clothes and soft toys but as time went on a career as a head teacher meant little time for such relaxation. Shortly before retirement a colleague showed me a quilt she made a class at Purely Patchwork in Linlithgow and on a visit to the shop, joined the Thursday evening class and was hooked.
Retirement gave me the opportunity to follow a dream and learn how to design my own work. I embarked on a City and Guild Course and a monthly Design Class where I learned the principles of design and met with the friends who became the fellow members of Freewheeling.
Around this time Loch Lomond Quilt show was started and we entered the Scottish Competition. I was delighted when my Quilt “Herring for Breakfast” won a prize. In 2010 I exhibited another winning quilt “Kelpies’ Eye “
Through Freewheeling I have had the opportunity to exhibit in a variety of locations around the country and further developed my skills through the monthly group meetings and workshops.
Along with Freewheeling I am a member of Quilters Guild of the British Isles and one of their sub groups Contemporary Quilt. I continue to be a Friend of Loch Lomond Quilt Show and Studio. I am grateful for the contribution these organisations have done to promote Patchwork and Quilting and Textile Art throughout the country.
The friendship and support from members of Freewheeling has further supported the development of my skills while challenging and widening my horizons. I look forward to continuing on this exciting journey.
